A capsule wardrobe is a fad that came about in the 1970s and has made a recent splash back in fashion. This idea promotes simplifying your wardrobe. Finding out what items you actually are wearing and reducing clutter in the closet. Capsule wardrobe lives by the motto “less is more”. Below we will walk you through our to create your very own capsule wardrobe.

The Rules

Capsule simplifies your wardrobe to about 30-50 pieces. A base of about 13-20 items.


From here you add on accessories and other pieces in your wardrobe that are worn less.

Your base should consist of versatile items that can be used in a combination of ways.

  • Long-Sleeved T-Shirt
  • Sweater
  • Tank Top
  • Button Up
  • Formal Shirt
  • Sleep Shirt
  • Gym Shirt
  • Blazer


  • Casual Pants
  • Jeans
  • Dress Pants
  • Shorts
  • Yoga Pants


  • Sneakers
  • Casual Shoes
  • Sandals
  • Boots
  • Dress Shoes

Choose a Color Scheme

For your base items, you should choose colors that are versatile. Base colors often consist of black, white, navy and grey.

This colors are neutrals and can be paired with a number of other pieces.

Items like coats and pants should be bought in these colors. As they will be put with almost everything in your wardrobe.

From here you chose two accent colors. These colors can be brighter and should be able to interchange with other items in the wardrobe. The accent colors are typically used for tops and accessories.

Once a color scheme is chosen. All of the the color combinations should be interchangeable.


If you are using items you already own for your capsule wardrobe. It’s time to sort.

Separate your clothes into categories.


  • Must Have: Items that fit you well, like a pair of jeans or a basic skirt. Must be versatile.
  • Maybe: Items you want to keep, but not sure why.
  • Donate: Items that no longer fit you and are no longer your style.
  • Trash: Items with holes or tears that should no longer be worn.

Continue to go through each article of clothing until you are down to your Must Have and Maybe Pile. From these two piles, select items that fit into your chosen color scheme. The items chosen must be interchangeable.

Primary Outfit Categories

After your done sorting your clothes. It’s time to figure out what sort of outfits you can put together.


  • Everyday: Errands, Grocery Shopping
  • Fun: Dates, Outings
  • Formal: Concerts, Formal Occasions
  • Active: Park Dates, Sports, Gym
  • Work: Meetings, Professional Looks
  • Lounge: Bedtime Looks, Hanging around the house

Think about your lifestyle and where you fall into these categories.

Take a look at your base items. Your tops, bottom, and shoes. Try and narrow your outfit categories to around three.

For example fun, formal and every day.  Then let the fun begin. See if your base items fit into each category. Find out if you need to add a sweater here or a dress there.

Take photos of each item and make a spreadsheet on your computer. Or a wardrobe board. Take a step back and see if the items look good as a collection. If so you are on your way to an awesome capsule wardrobe.
